The Next Big Fitness Trend of 2015 Revealed

Chances are your New Year’s resolution, like most of the U.S., is to lose weight and get more fit. Each year there is the next big trend that hits the fitness community as the must-try exercise of the year. In 2012 it was the Zumba craze, which was correctly predicted by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM).

This year, the next big fitness trend predicted by the ACSM is bodyweight training.

What exactly is bodyweight training? Put simply, its the basic moves you do at home or at the gym like squats, lunges and planks.

So why is this old routine the latest craze? The short answer is because it is the easiest to do without need for any equipment or fancy classes. You can also do these moves literally anywhere, so even if you are on the go or vacation, you can still keep up with your fitness regimen.

“This is not to say that body weight training had not been used previously; in fact, people have been using their own body weight for centuries as a form of resistance training,” the author’s write. “But new packaging particularly by commercial clubs has now made it popular in all kinds of gyms.

Surprisingly, this fitness trend did not build its way on the ACSM list until 2013. Even then, it only came in at number three. The study authors say that it has now become a :defined trend” in recent years.

The ACSM ranked high-intensity interval training as the second best fitness trend, followed by strength training. HIIT ranked number one last year.

Researchers from ACSM considered 39 trends for this year’s survey, finding that the top 25 trends that made the cut were also included in previous years.

Beloved Zumba dropped to 28, proving to be more of a fad now even though a session can burn off lots of calories. Pilates, indoor cycling, stability ball and balance training also failed to make the list of top 20 fitness trends for this year.
