Diane Sawyer To Step Down from ‘World News’

Diane Sawyer is setting down from her position as anchor of ABC’s “World News,” but will still continue to contribute as a journalist through new programming and specials. She will be replaced by David Muir, ABC News President James Goldston announced today.

“As much as she loved leading ‘World News’ to new heights … Diane decided that now is the moment to concentrate full-time on tackling big issues in new ways,” Goldston said in a statement. “Her curiosity, passion and energy inspire us all Diane is one of the giants of modern journalism, and we can’t wait to see where she’ll lead us next.”

Sawyer paved the way for female broadcast journalist (much like great Barbara Walters), interviewing prominent people and world leaders. Sawyer, 68, joined ABC in 1989 and held the top news job with the station for the past five years.

When Muir takes over on September 2, she will take on her new role leading “a team which will create and commission original reporting, big ideas and interviews,” Goldston said. It was also announced that George Stephanopoulos, who played a key role in making “Good Morning America” number 1 in ratings, will be promoted to chief anchor of ABC News.

He will cover major special events, breaking news, and election coverage including the 2016 presidential race. Along with his new position, Stephanopoulos, 53, will continue to co-anchor the morning news show.
