Dr. Oz Questioned By Senate About Weight Loss ‘Miracles’

Dr. Mehmet Oz was grilled in the hot seat by senators Tuesday for promoting weight loss products that have little scientific evidence on his show.

The popular television personality and host of “The Dr. Oz Show, is under fire after endorsing three products, such as green coffee beans, that Sen. Claire McCaskill (D. Missouri) said gives the public “false hope.” The panel, which is examining false advertising for weight loss products, scolded Dr. Oz for calling these products “miracles.”

“I don’t get why you need to say this stuff when you know it’s not true. When you have this amazing megaphone, why would you cheapen your show? … With power comes a great deal of responsibility,” McCaskill, the chairwoman of the Subcommittee on Consumer Protection, Product Safety and Insurance, who led the panel said.

In May, the Federal Trade Commission sued the sellers of Green Coffee Beans because they used fake news sites that promoted false health claims. There were three studies conducted on green coffee, one finding that participants lost on an average five pounds while taking the supplement. Another study found that participants lost 18 pounds over 22 weeks, and the last study that used mice found that they lost no weight and the supplement increased their insulin resistance.

Dr. Oz was also called out for promoting another weight loss supplement, Garcinia cambogia back on his show in November 2012. A meta-analysis of the product found that participants did not lose weight.

Dr. Oz testified that he could not be held responsible for what these companies say about their products. Although he admitted to using “flowery language” to describe products on his show, he said he would tone down the language and publish a lost of products he think really could aid in weight loss.

“My job, I feel, on the show is to be a cheerleader for the audience, and when they don’t think they have hope, when they don’t think they can make it happen, I want to look, and I do look everywhere, including in alternative healing traditions, for any evidence that might be supportive to them,” Oz, who has 12 million viewers said.

Do you think Dr. Oz is responsible for deceiving the public by endorsing products that have little scientific proof? Do you watch “The Dr. Oz. Show?” What are your thoughts on weight loss products?

  1. This is a very interesting topic. Although I don’t like Dr. Oz because that’s his entire show, it should just be called Weightloss. But I have seen great results in these products by people who have taken them exactly how they are suppose to be used. My mom works in a Vitamin Shoppe, and countless people have lost 20-30 pounds over time. It was a slow process they said, a pound or two a week, which is what your technically suppose to only lose. Garcinia Cambogia, and Green Coffee bean need to be taken 30 minutes prior to each meal, and people take it ten minutes before and then eat and think its going to work! It amazes me! Although I think Dr Oz should focus on diet and exercise instead of miracle pills, these actually do work for those who chose this route.

    1. While I question how safe and healthy these products are since they are not regulated by the FDA, I think that some products could work for some, especially if they are taken the right way, like you said. I think that Dr. Oz should not be endorsing these types of products though. He should be promoting natural ways to lose weight in my opinion, but I see both sides of the coin and some people respond to different measures. Thanks for your comment!

  2. When Doctor Mehmet Oz started he had great intentions. When money started rolling into his bank account and brands got to him he turned into an endorsement machine. We want the old Oz back 🙂

    1. Yes, we do! I never really watched his show until I had a friend who loved him. Even if he had good intentions, once money comes involved, obviously he is going to praise the products. Bring back the old Oz! Thanks for reading.

  3. Excellent blog! Do you have any tips and hints for aspiring
writers? I’m planning to start my own blog soon but I’m a little lost on everything.

Would you recommend starting with a free platform like WordPress or go for
a paid option? There are so many options out there that I’m totally overwhelmed ..
    Any tips? Thanks a lot!

    1. Thank you so very much! The biggest tip I can give is to make sure that you consistently post on your blog. Whether than means every day, once a week, etc, just make sure that you keep posting regularly. Connect with other like-minded bloggers, read and comment on their blogs, and they will frequently follow yours. Social media is also a great tool to promote your posts and get more readers. I started this blog on wordpress for free, but then brought the domain from them so that I own my url. I have also used blogger.com in the past and like that platform as well, but I am more of a wordpress person. I suggest start with a free option and when you build up your readers and get comfortable blogging, you can also buy a domain later on and try to set up ads and possible make some side money off of it. Hope this helps and if you have more questions, feel free to ask! Good luck!
