The Benefits Of Drinking Water You Didn’t Know

There are so many benefits to drinking water. But I bet you didn’t know these things.

Nothing tastes and feels better than an ice-cold glass of water after a workout. And while you know that we should be drinking water before, during and after a run or other exercise, many of us fail to drink enough water in a given day.

According to the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, it is recommended that women drink 11.5 cups or 2.7 liters of fluids per day and men consume 15.5 cups or 3.7 liters.

The body needs water to properly function. Water does everything from cushioning the brain to regulating body temperature and helping to remove waste.

Here are some more benefits of drinking water that you probably didn’t also know.

health benefits of drinking water

Water is needed when exercises. And not only for hydration.

Water Boosts Muscle Performance

Water lubricates the joints so that you can safely workout. But it also helps to prevent muscle cramping, thus enhance performance so that you can work out longer before muscle fatigue sets in.

Water Gives Energy

Forget an energy drink, water is all you need.

Drinking water helps to boost energy. It does so by helping the heart pump blood more effectively. And since it helps transport oxygen in the blood, this results in an instant wake me up.

Water Curbs Hunger

Drinking more water also aids in weight loss. By drinking more water the stomach is fuller. That means less temptation to consume unwanted calories when on a diet.

It is best to drink a glass of water before a meal to help with portion control to not eat the entire plate.

Plus, drinking water means you are switching to a zero-calorie option compared to high-caloric options like juice or soda.

Water also jumpstarts metabolism to further burn calories.

Water Helps With Bathroom Needs

Yes, you know that water helps urination which in turn removes toxins from the body. But drinking more water means you also will be able to be more regular when it comes to number two.

When you don’t drink enough water the colon has to pull fluids from stools. That means constipation occurs.

Drinking more water helps waste to move through the GI tract and keeps the colon lubricated enough to pass that waste.

Water Lowers Stress

60% of the body is made of water. But what you probably didn’t know is that 70 to 80 percent of brain tissue is water.

Not drinking enough water adds stress to the body and brain. This can cause headaches and increased stress. By simply drinking more water you can help to lower stress.

Many follow the popular advice of drinking eight glasses of water a day. This is a great way to remember how much to drink, but many people (myself included) fall to drink enough water.
