Known as “The Voice of New York,” Angie Martinez announced yesterday that she was leaving radio station Hot 97 in a statement that shocked all hip-hop fans. Even though she is leaving the station after a 20-year run, she is not dropping the mic just yet. Martinez announced that she will be joining both NY competitor station Power 105.1 and 103.5 fm.
“This was one of the toughest decisions I’ve ever had to make but ultimately it is time to move on, to grow and to be challenged in new ways,” she said in her farewell post.
She resigned on-air Wednesday after posted her Instagram photo saying goodbye.
“Saying goodbye is always emotional and bitter sweet but I am extremely excited about the future. Thank you HOT97 and most importantly….the listeners… for an unimaginable journey,” she wrote on her Instagram account.
Clear Channel Media and Entertainment announced today that Martinez is scheduled to host an afternoon show from 2-6 p.m. on Power 105.1 and midday on 103.5 The Beat in Miami.
While some fans are happy that she is making the power move, others took to social media sites like Twitter to call the radio personality fake and a sell-out. Martinez began her radio career with Hot 97 when she was an intern in her teenage years, eventually moving up as a host for the past 15 years.
Are you happy that Angie Martinez is making the switch to Power 105.1, or do you think it is wrong she is leaving the station that made her famous (even President Obama calls her “The Voice of New York”) to go with the competitors?
