Running Towards Goals

I read on Twitter (follow me @newschixOxO or @nylifesupply) that it was exactly six months until Thanksgiving yesterday. Time really does fly. But it’s it ironic how six months ago and six months ahead can feel like an eternity and a blink of an eye?

In my perspective, six months is enough time to achieve the goals you set out for yourself. As we are looking ahead to the warm-weathered beach days, we often sometimes look back at our past, especially when thinking about accomplishments.

I remember thinking back in December that I was going to make 2014 my year. I have accomplished a lot almost six months into it, and plan on keeping running towards my goals.

I started off the year with a bang, finishing my final semester as an undergrad. With the birth of a new year, I soon celebrated my birthday (Capricorn!), got my first “real job,” started freelancing, and then began training for my first half marathon. Not only did I finish that race, but I went on to finish my first Spartan Race.

Seems like now is the perfect time for reflection. Tomorrow is my graduation ceremony, and although I already have my diploma, attending the ceremony will make it all feel more real. I am proud of myself for putting in the hard work and finally being a college graduate!

I began running last July and remember trying to squeeze in runs—and some 5ks— last semester between all the school work and reporting I was doing. Running allowed my to free my mind. Sometimes I would run hard, thinking about leaving my fears and stresses behind and allowing my grounded wings to carry me across the finish line of the goals I set out for myself.

Last night, I was feeling stressed out, and although I went for an early morning run, I could not wait to get home and sweat out the stress. I ran passionately. My legs felt strong, like how my fingers feel with a pen in hand. Each stride was each stroke of the pen. Fleshing out my thoughts to form words in the wind, creating poetry in motion. I ran along my favorite route and pushed myself, enjoying every moment of it. I have been aiming to run under 10-mintue miles and am getting closer to consistently reaching this goal.

I still have a to ways to go as far as speed, but I am seeing slow progress. In the past, I was working towards endurance and duration. I love long-distance runs, but now have a new-found love for short speed runs. I will continue to push hard to achieve this next running goal. If you have any tips on how I can gain more speed, please reveal them in the comments!

I know this post is getting long now, but I also began writing writing for The Healthy Onion, a satirical health news site and so far it has been a lot of fun writing these. Check out my latest, Top 5 Ways to Burn Calories Without Exercising.

I have also reached over 100 posts now on this site and I hope it continues to grow. Here is to all the runners and writers out there. I hope we all continue to run towards our goals.
