I feel like a badass. That’s because I am halfway through a new boxing program called 10 Rounds that has me throwing knockout punches that also is knock out out some serious stress while being stuck at home.
Don’t get me wrong, I am still going outside for runs and walks with the kids. But nothing feels as good as knocking out al my frustrations, fears, stress and anxiety by shadowboxing.
But this boxing program has already shipped me to be stronger both physically and mentally and I am only more than halfway through with it.
This is the best time for a program like this to launch to “get some aggression out,” its creator said during a conference call with coaches.
“You can do this and punch and not go to jail,” the humorous Joel Freeman said.
What Is Shadowboxing?
Called 10 Rounds, this boxing program is created by super trainer Joel Freeman who has over 15 years of fitness experience including creating the popular program LIIFT4.
As its name suggests, it features 10 rounds of workouts with each round lasting for three minutes. There is a recovery break in between each round.
In those three minutes, you are getting your heart rate up, burning fat and toning the muscles.
A big misconception is that boxing workouts only works out the arm muscles. But this is a full-body workout where you engage your core and work your legs.
It’s a low-impact workout so it doesn’t require jumping or hard moves like burpees, a perfect program for working out at home. Instead, this is all about fat loss thanks to its power, speed, and endurance training.
Shadowboxing means you are basically just punching the air. You don’t need boxing gloves, and the program comes with a 10-minute basic moves video that is recommended to watch before starting so you are familiar with the moves.
This includes six punches and two defense moves. These are easy to remember and Joel calls out the combos throughout the entire workout. Repetition is key in this boxing program, so you will master the moves.
More Than Punches
10 Rounds boxing program consists of five days of workouts. That’s right, you get two days off! Now this means you can completely rest or do another workout like going for a walk, run, or yoga. This is up to you.
The program itself features three days of boxing and two days of lifting. The latter includes an arm day and leg day. This means you are further creating lean muscle ad increasing strength and endurance throughout the program.
What you do need for the boxing at-home workouts is a pair of dumbbells (better if you have a light pair and heavier pair), but if you don’t you can just use your bodyweight or improvise and use something you have at home (wine bottles?!). You do need the dumbbells if you really want to see results.
You also need a towel that is used for conditioning and agility moves, as well as resistance loops that are provided with the program.
What You Can Expect
One of the best things about this boxing program is that you do it at home. This means stream the videos from your smart TV, laptop, computer or phone at any time.
Besides having an effective at home workout at your fingertips is the fact that the worlds are short, perfect for being busy at home. Each workout is 30 to 40 minutes, so I have enough time to homeschool my toddler, workout, work from home and take care of all my responsibilities throughout the day.
It’s fast-paced and while you can go at your Owen speed, these explosive rounds leave me dripping in sweat every workout—even on lifting days.
Plus it’s a program that is not like anything out there. This was one of Freeman’s challenges he had when creating it.
“To bring in the world of home fitness video and still make it look authentic and bring in authenticity go boxing world,” was the most challenging part he told me during the conference call.
Who Is The Program For?

“That’s what this program is for,” Freeman said. “That’s exactly how I designed it. It’s made for people who never thrown a punch before.”
You don’t “graduate” in this 6-week at home workout program, you just keep getting better. Which is why it’s still effective for those who have boxing experience too. Even Freeman frequently does the week 1, day 1 workout again and is left challenged. “Just because its basic skills doesn’t mean it will an easy workout.”
